Orthopedic Clinic

The Kiwanis Club of Washington, D.C. Orthopaedic Clinic

The Kiwanis Club Of Washington, D.C. A unique service provided to the children of the "working poor" of the Metropolitan Washington area is our Kiwanis Orthopaedic Clinic.  Our Clinic is housed in the Community Service Building on the grounds of Sibley Memorial Hospital in Northwest Washington, D.C.  Opened in 1923 primarily for the purpose of treating juvenile victims of then-dreaded polio, our Clinic has treated more than 27,000 children during the intervening years.

Today our Clinic treats between 350-400 children per year for spinal scoliosis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, as well as other birth defects and childhood diseases and accidents.

The Clinic is staffed by a number of pediatric orthopaedic specialists from the Georgetown University Medical School who donate their time and expertise on a pro bono publico basis.  Our physicians usually perform over a dozen complicated surgeries per year, countless other simple procedures, and work closely with our staff in post-operative and rehabilitative treatment.  The value of our doctors' pro bono services was calculated last year as being between $850,000 and $900,00!

Our doctors are assisted by our professional staff of pediatric nursing, X-ray and appliance specialists, all experts in physical therapy, post-operative care, and rehabilitative treatment.

While our emphasis is on medical and rehabilitative treatment, we are sensitive to the fact that our patients are children.  Accordingly, they participate in the Spring Carnival and Fall Outing described on the "Children" page, and in addition, the Clinic has its own celebrations for Halloween, Christmas and other holidays.
