Joe Riley Youth Leadership Awards
Founded 15 years ago by the Kiwanis Club of Washington, the Joe Riley Youth Leadership Awards recognize students in the DC Public Schools who demonstrate outsanding leadership and contribute extensively to the betterment of their communities. There is a nominee from each DC Public High School, and each is assigned a Kiwanis school partner as a mentor. Each finalist receives a new laptop computer for college; the third place winner receives a $5,000 scholarship; second place receives $7,500 and the first place winner receives a $10,000 scholarship for college.
Since the inception of the Joe Riley scholarship program 15 years ago, the Kiwanis Club of Washington, DC, has given away more than $250,000 in scholarships and more than 250 laptop computer.
During his long and distinguished career, Joe volunteered his caring and his leadership skills in countless civic and charity organizations. Among these he served as President of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the Christmas Pageant of Peace, the D.C. Bankers Association, and of course, the Kiwanis Club of Washington, D.C.
Helping to continue the integrity and spirit of our Nation and the free enterprise system, was always a source of pride and joy for Joe Riley. Finding ways to develop the leaders and managers of tomorrow was of paramount importance to him. The Kiwanis Club of Washington, DC is proud to honor the memory of this true gentleman and community servant through instituting the Joe Riley Youth Leadership Awards.
